Portuguese Trade Union Merger
At their recent respective congresses, the two affiliates of the Portuguese trade union Confederation CGTP-IN, the EMF affiliate FEQUIMETAL and the electrical workers’ federation, the Federação dos Sindicatos das Indústrias Eléctricas de Portugal, voted to merge in order to form a new trade union federation with the name of FIEQUIMETAL – Federação Intersindical das Indústrias Metalúrgicas, Química, Farmacêutica, Eléctrica, Energia e Minas. The new organisation is representing workers of the metal, chemical, pharmaceutical, electrical, energy and mining industries.
FIEQUIMETAL thus becomes one of the biggest industrial trade unions in Portugal. The merger is a response to the need to strengthen the organisation and give it more weight in order to better defend the workers’ it represents especially vis-à-vis the Portuguese Government and the EU.
FIEQUIMETAL aims to continue and deepen its relations with sister organisations within the framework of the EMF at both a bilateral and multilateral level.
