EMF Resolution on Return Directive
The Return Directive [1] contains discriminatory elements and couldeliminate and exclude culture and social systems.
The Return Directive establishes a common set of rules applicable to third-country nationals staying illegally in the territory of Member States. It is claimed that the Directive will ensure a more harmonised and effective approach to return procedures on the part of Member States while respecting the rights of third-country nationals in an illegal situation.
The Executive Committee of the EMF states however that the language used in the Return Directive is harsh and shows zero tolerance. It contains discriminatory elements and it could exclude and eliminate a social system based on diversity and coexistence.
The new Return Directive is likely to create a climate of social and economic insecurity. It will result in the displacement of people who are fleeing from difficult situations and it goes against the vision of an open Europe as a symbol of liberty and hospitality.
People flows in Europe will continue and the Return Directive will not stop them. The real problem of sustenance, coexistence, employment and integration cannot be confronted or solved with a discriminatory policy such as the Return Directive.
The EMF and its affiliated organisations are convinced that true security is based on inclusive policies which promote, ensure and protect social justice and the rights of all citizens, no matter where they are from.
Trade unions and workers have to continue working jointly on the construction and promotion of a culture of solidarity and on the spreading of rights. All together, men and women, workers, the unemployed and the retired from all origins have to defend their rights and common interests. Only united can they effectively promote and demand an offensive trade union action.
Trade unions have to continue strengthening the equality of rights, the recognition of diversity and the fight against all forms of discrimination.
