End of Strike at AEG Electrolux Nuremberg
The workers at the white goods producer AEG Electrolux in Nuremberg have been on strike for almost six weeks to prevent the closure of the plant at the end of next year. This closure was announced in the framework of the restructuring process for the whole of the Electrolux group.
The strike has now been called off as an agreement was reached on the morning of 28th February after long and tough negotiations. A ballot of the trade union members will be held, but IG Metall believes that the agreement will be accepted by its membership.
“Of course we are not happy that we were unable to achieve our main goal - preventing the closure of the plant - but a respectable result has nevertheless been obtained given the circumstances,“ said Peter Scherrer, the General Secretary of the European Metalworkers’ Federation. “It is thanks to the workers’ commitment and their willingness to fight that Electrolux reacted after almost six weeks of the strike." commented Berthold Huber, the Vice-president of the German metalworkers’ trade union, IG Metall.
The settlement agreed with the company will provide employees with severance pay equal to 1.8 x gross monthly pay per year of employment. (Electrolux had initially offered only 0.77). According to information from IG Metall, a company agreement has been reached for several other Electrolux plants in Germany. It has been agreed that plants and employment in the dishwasher branch will be maintained until 31.12.2009. An agreement has also been reached to maintain the location and
employment at AEG Rothenburg until the end of 2009, provided that a local company agreement can be reached on training and qualifications.
