European Shipyards’ Week

23/03/2006

With their joint conference on 22nd March 2006 in the European Parliament the European-level social partners EMF and CESA officially launched the European Shipyards’ Week.

In the course of one week (27-31 March 2006) the national level social partners in the shipbuilding industry of 10 EU Member States will be joining forces to demonstrate to young graduates, school leavers and skilled workers that modern shipbuilding offers many perspectives and rewarding career opportunities in a high-tech job environment.

The initiative aims at securing a highly-skilled workforce in European Shipyards as a key factor in ensuring productivity, innovation and competitiveness. 10 participating countries, namely Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom will be organising numerous activities and events. These range from information campaigns, workshops, national and regional conferences, open days at the yards, training courses for young job seekers to competitions and prize draws. The activities are aimed primarily at prospective shipbuilding career seekers, schools and universities but also the general public and policy-makers.

The Conference in Brussels brought together some 150 participants including the social partners from the major European shipyards, representatives from the maritime regions, national government representatives and representatives from the European institutions.

The programme featured presentations by Commission representatives including Commissioner Spidla and leading Members of the European Parliament including Prof. Hans-Gert Pöttering, Chairman of the EPP, and Harlem Désir, Vice-Chairman of the PSE Group.
