The EMF strongly supports the ETUC demonstration on the services directive
The ETUC is calling for a major demonstration on the Services Directive on 14th February 2006 in Strasbourg.
On that day the European Parliament is meeting in plenary session and will debate and vote on the draft directive. “The European metalworkers will make sure that the attention of Members of the European Parliament will be drawn to the most important issues of the draft directive”, Peter Scherrer, the EMF General Secretary pointed out in his call for support. For the EMF a series of points are of crucial importance:
· The complete removal of the “country of origin principle”
· The exclusion of labour law together with all collective agreements from the
directive
· The exclusion of “services of general interest”
The directive as it is now would lead to increasingly unfair competition and would costs thousands of jobs. It would lead to a downward spiralling of the working and living conditions in the old and new member states of the European Union. Instead of creating a social Europe, it would open the door for undermining social conditions on a wide scale.
The EMF wants an improved Social Europe. The EMF is fighting for the rights of European metalworkers and asks all its members to support the manifestation on February 14th in Strasbourg.
